'Flawless' Massa back to his best

Felipe Massa celebrates second in the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Felipe Massa's performances at the end of the 2014 Formula 1 season show he is back to his very best, according to Williams performance chief Rob Smedley.

Massa endured a difficult end to his stint at Ferrari in 2013, finishing on the podium just once during his final season at Maranello.

After moving to Williams this year, Massa improved that tally to three, and second place in the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix represented his best result in F1 since the 2012 Japanese GP.

Smedley, who worked closely with Massa at Ferrari before also joining Williams for this season, said his driver's performance at Yas Marina - where he came within three seconds of denying Lewis Hamilton victory - was "flawless".

"When I first turned up [at Williams] and saw how relaxed he was in this environment, I knew that we could start to get the results that he should be getting," Smedley explained.

"And I think that has just been compounded as the year has gone on, and as he has enjoyed the environment more he has got better and better.

"I think in Abu Dhabi you saw the very best Felipe. He was absolutely flawless; he didn't put a foot wrong, there was lots of information coming back, he was involved in the strategy.

"I asked his race engineer to get him involved in that final tyre call [where Massa switched to super-soft tyres], he gave him all the information and he said 'let's go for it'.

"That's what a top driver does. A top driver gets involved and he leads from the front.

"And not only that, he was absolutely flawless: the in- and out-laps, everything, and that's the best Felipe."

Although Massa is now 33 and 2014 was his 12th season on the F1 grid, Smedley believes there is "no limit" to what he can still achieve in the rest of his career if he can maintain his current form.

"The Felipe I know can drive like that, and we have to get him and his team-mate to a level where they are doing that every weekend," said Smedley.

"If we do that, and deliver the car, then there are no limits [to what they can achieve]."

Sainz not unnerved by Verstappen

By Pablo Elizalde and Matt Beer Saturday, November 29th 2014, 16:27 GMT

Carlos Sainz Jr

Carlos Sainz Jr says the fact that he was initially overlooked by Toro Rosso in favour of Max Verstappen means nothing now that they are 2015 Formula 1 team-mates.

Red Bull thrust Verstappen straight from European Formula 3 to a Toro Rosso position just days after recruiting him to its junior programme, elevating him ahead of its long-time young drivers - including eventual Formula Renault 3.5 champion Sainz.

OPINION: Toro Rosso was right to choose Sainz

Sebastian Vettel's departure for Ferrari and Daniil Kvyat's promotion to Red Bull Racing to replace him ultimately opened up a second Toro Rosso F1 slot after all, with the team announcing Sainz for the drive on Friday.

The 20-year-old Spaniard said he and Verstappen would now start on an equal footing in their bid to be next to earn a Red Bull Racing graduation.

"Red Bull has the same pressure for both of us to do a good job," said Sainz.

"Just because he was announced first, it means nothing.

"In March we are both starting from scratch and that's why I'll have to do better than him from the first race, and to try to surprise the bosses more than he does. That's the target."

But while admitting that it would be important for his career to beat Verstappen, Sainz said their relationship was good so far.

"I met him on Sunday in Abu Dhabi and we talked for an hour and it went really well - better than you could imagine because there was no tension whatsoever," he said.

"Both of us have a lot to learn to develop the car during the year, and also to try to beat each other, which will be the fun part."

Sainz said Red Bull junior programme chief Dr Helmut Marko had given him a lot of support in the build-up to his F1 announcement, and he intends to repay his backer's faith.

"I've told him that I'm very grateful and that he can be calm because he made the right decision and I'm not going to let him down," said Sainz.

Wittmann to test 2012 STR at Imola

Sunday, November 30th 2014, 16:34 GMT

Marco Wittmann wins the 2014 DTM title

DTM champion Marco Wittmann's BMW-arranged Formula 1 test will take place in a 2012 Toro Rosso at former San Marino Grand Prix venue Imola on Thursday.

BMW offered the test to Wittmann as a reward for his dominant performance in this year's DTM.

The 25-year-old German was a single-seater racer until the end of 2011, when he switched to what began as a test role with BMW after finishing second to Roberto Merhi in European Formula 3.

BMW announced at the DTM finale last month that it had arranged the run for Wittmann via its sponsor Red Bull, and has now firmed up the date and location, as well as the use of a 2012 car - the most modern permitted under F1's testing restrictions.

The Toro Rosso run will follow a variety of other post-title celebrations for Wittmann, including various awards in Germany and a recent outing in several 1980s BMW DTM cars.

"It has obviously been an extremely busy time for me since the end of the DTM season," he said.

"I have hardly spent a single day at home. However, I am still really enjoying myself.

"After all, the reason for me having all these appointments is the fact that I was crowned the DTM champion."
