Raikkonen: Mattiacci good for Ferrari

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 01 Juli 2014 | 14.13

By Ben Anderson Monday, June 30th 2014, 10:32 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen, Marco Mattiacci and Fernando Alonso

Kimi Raikkonen is encouraged by new Ferrari Formula 1 team boss Marco Mattiacci's approach to turning the Scuderia's ailing fortunes around.

Mattiacci took over from outgoing team principal Stefano Domenicali in April, and insisted after the recent Austrian Grand Prix that Ferrari has a recovery plan in place to improve its disappointing form.

Finn Raikkonen, who is struggling with his own issues with the handling of Ferrari's F14 T, reckons the work Mattiacci has done since he arrived is cause for optimism within the team.

"Everybody has their own way of doing things - it's very early days for Marco, and when he started he didn't have as much knowledge as Stefano of F1, but he's a very nice guy and he wants to really make a difference and know the sport," Raikkonen said during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.

"Those are good signs. He's doing a lot of work that people don't see and I think he's doing a very good job.

"He's a good guy to work with; he's just a different person from Stefano.

"I had a pretty close relationship with Stefano but it's just a change for all of us, and I think sometimes that's a good thing.

"People come from outside of F1 with a different view of things and it can help.

"It's been good so far and I'm expecting he can do a very good job."

Fernandes close to Caterham sale

By Jonathan Noble Monday, June 30th 2014, 12:18 GMT

Marcus Ericsson, Caterham Austrian GP 2014

The Caterham Formula 1 team's future is expected to be resolved before the British Grand Prix, as its owner Tony Fernandes closes in on a deal to sell the outfit.

Fernandes declared before the start of the season that unless the Leafield-based team made significant progress this season then he would likely sever his ties with it.

"If we're at the back I don't think I'm going to carry on," he explained.

"Nothing is set in stone, but after five years with no points there is a limit to one's patience, money, motivation, etc. So it's an important year."

With the team having had a tough time on track, and currently bottom of the F1 constructors' championship, Fernandes opened discussions with a number of potential investors who might be interested in taking over from him.

Speculation that a deal was close increased on Friday when, shortly before closing down his official Twitter account, Fernandes suggested that he had given up on the F1 project.

"F1 hasn't worked, but love Caterham Cars," he declared.

Sources have suggested that a final decision on selling the team will likely be made this week - with an announcement possible before the Caterham team arrives at Silverstone for this weekend's British GP.

Although former F1 team principal Colin Kolles has emerged as the leading contender to conclude a deal with Fernandes, sources with good knowledge of the situation suggest that there are at least three other interested parties who remain in talks.

Kolles was last involved as an F1 team principal at the end of 2011, having run the Hispania outfit for its first two years in grand prix racing.

He has however more recently been involved in plans for a new Romanian team called Forza Rossa, which is hoping to get on the grid next year.

Caterham's current 11th position in the constructors' championship means it is at risk of losing valuable commercial rights income at the end of the year unless it can overhaul Sauber and Marussia.

Only the F1 team is affected by the sale talks, with Fernandes set to retain ownership of Caterham Cars and the Caterham GP2 team.

Sutil doesn't regret Sauber move

By Ben Anderson Monday, June 30th 2014, 15:43 GMT

Adrian Sutil, Sauber, Australian GP 2014, Melbourne

Adrian Sutil has no regrets about leaving the Force India Formula 1 team for Sauber, despite the contrasting fortunes of the two squads so far this season.

Force India lies fourth in the F1 constructors' championship, after scoring points in every race so far this year, while Sutil's new team Sauber has yet to register on the scoreboard after eight grands prix.

The Swiss squad has struggled with chassis and engine issues on the C33, but Sutil is happy to see his old team doing well and is hopeful Sauber can perform just as strongly once it gets on top of its problems.

"I had wonderful years with Force India, and I needed a change and I went to Sauber," Sutil said, when asked by AUTOSPORT if he was frustrated to see Force India do so well while Sauber struggles.

"So this chapter is done for me and I'm happy to see them be successful, and I did a lot of work so maybe this is [why they have] what they have right now.

"I'm not thinking back, [and] that it's a shame I'm not there. It's OK they have a good result, I am happy for them.

"Life goes on - new team, new challenge, no regrets. It would be great to do as well as Force India with this team in the future."
