Raikkonen says he's just been unlucky

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 03 Juni 2014 | 14.13

By Ben Anderson Monday, June 2nd 2014, 09:40 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen feels collisions during his 2014 Formula 1 campaign have masked how well he has driven so far on his Ferrari return.

The Finn driver lies well adrift of third-placed team-mate Fernando Alonso in the drivers' championship after six races, but he was on course to beat the Spaniard for the first time this year in the Monaco Grand Prix until a collision with Max Chilton's Marussia spoiled his race.

Raikkonen was also compromised by contact in Malaysia and Bahrain earlier this year, and he reckons incidents like this have made his personal performances look worse than they actually have been.

"I have driven well many times, but there's always been something going wrong in the races - like punctures from other people hitting me - and it's just never come together really," Raikkonen said, when asked by AUTOSPORT if the Monaco GP was his best drive of the season.

Massa: Raikkonen's struggles no surprise

"It's a shame. Again we had a good position [in Monaco] but got a puncture so it's just bad luck.

"Small things go wrong and make a massive difference in the end."

The 2007 F1 world champion is still not fully comfortable with the handling of the F14 T, but he reckons more work and a bit more luck will turn his difficult season around.

"Once we get a good feeling with things I'm sure it's going to be a lot better," Raikkonen added.

"But until we get the results and things fixed we have to keep fighting and hopefully be a bit more lucky in the future."

Wolff: driver freedom won't backfire

By Ben Anderson Monday, June 2nd 2014, 10:09 GMT

Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is convinced his team can control the simmering rivalry between its Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

The 2014 F1 title rivals have already been rebuked for breaking team orders and using more powerful engine settings while battling on track this season, before the Monaco Grand Prix furore that led to the two drivers refusing to speak to each other on the podium.

Wolff accepted allowing his drivers to fight each other on track would make things more difficult for the team, but insisted Mercedes could prevent the rivalry getting out of hand.

When asked whether Mercedes could keep a lid on the simmering tensions between its drivers, Wolff said: "Yes. Absolutely. They are part of a very large organisation and I have 110 per cent confidence that it will not be to the detriment of the team."

GARY ANDERSON: How Mercedes must manage its drivers

Wolff said Mercedes also "owed it to the fans" to continue to allow Hamilton and Rosberg to race each other.

"This is a bit more stressful for the team to manage, but I don't want a situation where we just freeze the order throughout the race - that is not what F1 is about," Wolff added.

"Therefore we have to manage the consequences.

"We have seen in the past some very famous team principals with two very competitive drivers who were fighting for the championship, and each of the situations has a certain charm.

"In our case we adopted the philosophy of letting them race, which as a consequence means that management is a bit more difficult.

"[But] our team comes first, and we will never accept an individual putting themselves above the team.

"Both of them know that, accept that, and have adopted that philosophy."

Hamilton said via social media on Friday saying he and Rosberg had put their Monaco issues behind them.

Allison: Ferrari needs more creativity

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 01 Juni 2014 | 14.13

By Ben Anderson Friday, May 30th 2014, 10:49 GMT

Ferrari needs to give its engineers more space to be creative if it wants to develop winning Formula 1 cars, according to technical director James Allison.

The Scuderia has not won a race for over a year and last captured a title in 2008.

Former champion Alain Prost said recently that traditionally successful F1 outfits like Ferrari and McLaren needed to rethink their approach to the sport, after being consistently outwitted by younger teams such as Red Bull and Mercedes in recent years.

Eric Boullier has begun implementing a recovery plan for the Woking-based squad, while Allison, who joined Ferrari from Lotus at the end of last year, said the Italian squad needed to put plans in place to allow its engineers to innovate without fear of failure.

"Creativity and originality are really important parts of being competitive," explained Allison.

"However, there's nothing magic.

"If you want creativity in your car you have to plan for it and give space to the people to bring their creativity forward.

"If you force them to operate with their backs against the wall, up against deadlines that are very, very tight, then there's no time for them to think about how they might approach something differently, because they only have one option - that's to give you something they know will work.

"There is a wealth of talent at Ferrari - the experience and quality of the people on the technical side is the match of any team - it's a matter of giving them the space and the encouragement to do unusual things, and know that if they fail there's still time to put a backup plan in place."

Allison said Ferrari had already changed "significantly" since he joined the team, but conceded the results of that change would take time to pay off.

"This is a sport that kills you if you're complacent," he added.

"There's a significant amount of organisational change that's happened since I arrived, there will be more as we realise how to do things better in the future, and there will be more after that.

"I hope some of the really key foundations of what I'm trying to do were put in place some months ago and will pay off increasingly over time."

De Silvestro: gender no issue in racing

By Ben Anderson Friday, May 30th 2014, 14:16 GMT

Simona de Silvestro says she has encountered no gender discrimination in motorsport during her rise to a Formula 1 role with Sauber.

The former IndyCar racer has given up her race seat for an affiliate role with the Hinwil-based F1 squad for this year, which includes testing in a two-year old Sauber C31.

She reckons most racing teams are more concerned with how fast a driver is, rather than whether they are male or female, and that the lack of top-level female drivers is due to a relative dearth of girls competing in the lower tiers compared to boys.

"If we look in karts there's maybe 100 boys racing and maybe three or four girls so the ratio is definitely at the smaller end," she said when asked by AUTOSPORT if she had encountered gender bias during her rise through the ranks.

"In general racing to get to a high level is difficult whether you are a boy or a girl.

"You have to prove yourself and there are so many drivers.

"Every driver on the planet wants to get to F1 and there are only 22 seats.

"I've never felt it was tougher or different, because I think the important thing is to prove you can be as fast, and if you are winning races or upfront people just consider you a race car driver."

A female driver has not raced in F1 since Lella Lombardi finished 12th in the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix, though others have attempted to qualify.

De Silvestro said she felt no extra pressure or expectation to succeed as a woman in F1, if she graduates to a race seat as planned.

"I don't think it's pressure or expectation; to me the important thing is that I show we can be competitive and up until now I think I've been able to do that in my career," she added.

"Until IndyCar I've always won races and always been up front. Those are important criteria, and if I get the chance to go into F1 I want to do the same thing - show that we can be as fast as the guys. That's the key."

De Silvestro also rubbished suggestions that Sauber having a female team boss in Monisha Kaltenborn might be an advantage to her.

"I don't think it helps [that] I'm a girl, but it's the first time I've had a female boss, so it is different," de Silvestro said.

"What she has seen in me is that I really want this, that I really want to make it happen.

"I don't think it changes anything because at the end of the day I'm here to work."

Hamilton clears the air with Rosberg

By Ben Anderson Friday, May 30th 2014, 16:50 GMT

Lewis Hamilton says he has spoken to Formula 1 title rival Nico Rosberg following their falling out at the recent Monaco Grand Prix, and says they are still friends.

Tension between the two Mercedes drivers has been rising since the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this month, where Hamilton reportedly used a more powerful engine mode to repel Rosberg's attack for the win late in the race, forcing an apology from the Briton afterwards.

The relationship between the two team-mates broke down further at last weekend's Monaco GP, where Rosberg took the escape road at Mirabeau in the dying moments of qualifying, bringing out yellow flags and denying Hamilton the chance to snatch pole.

Hamilton insinuated that Rosberg did this deliberately and refused to speak to his team-mate on the podium after finishing second to him in the race, leading to criticism from Mercedes executive Niki Lauda.

Mercedes has moved to play down comparisons of the rivalry to the bitter feud between Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna in the late 1980s and early '90s, and Hamilton said he had since spoken to his team-mate to clear the air.

Posting a picture on Twitter of the two on unicycles from their younger days, Hamilton said: "We've been friends a long time, and as friends we have our ups and downs.

"Today we spoke and we're cool, still friends #noproblem".
