Alonso not expecting Bahrain progress

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 02 April 2014 | 14.12

By Ben Anderson Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 13:31 GMT

Fernando Alonso expects Ferrari to remain off the pace of the Formula 1 frontrunners during the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend.

The Spaniard finished fourth in each of the first two races of the new season, but criticised his Ferrari's lack of competitiveness both times.

He says the Scuderia is working hard to close the deficit to pacesetters Mercedes and Red Bull, but reckons the short gap between last weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix and the forthcoming race at Sakhir will make it difficult for Ferrari to make inroads.

"For Bahrain I don't think it will change too much the picture from here," Alonso said.

"Obviously, in a few days we are on track, so the cars will be more or less similar.

"Track characteristics are a little bit different. With long straights probably we will see a car with very good top speed will be competitive.

"It's going to be tough again, but somehow we manage always to be in the top five, which at the moment with the performance we have is giving us some good points."

Although Alonso finished roughly 35 seconds behind the winning Mercedes for the second consecutive race, the double world champion said Ferrari had closed the gap to the frontrunners in Malaysia.

"We were a little bit faster than we saw in Melbourne," he added.

"It's true we finished 35s behind Rosberg in Melbourne, but there we had a safety car.

"Without that safety car maybe we were one minute behind Mercedes. Now we are 35s, which is still not good and we need to do better.

"In Bahrain, unfortunately I see not much to do in terms of magic changes, because it's only five days, but no one in the team is giving up.

"We know what we need to do, we have the potential, we have the talented people, [and] we have the resources."

Raikkonen pins hopes on upgrades

By Ben Anderson Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 13:43 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen is pinning his hopes of an upturn in form in Formula 1 on a set of new parts expected for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Finn has struggled with the front end of his Ferrari in the first two races of the season.

He showed improved form through practice and qualifying for round two in Malaysia last weekend, before contact early in the race from Kevin Magnussen's McLaren ruined his chances.

Alonso not expecting Bahrain progress

Raikkonen says Ferrari is bringing new parts to his car for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix and he is hopeful they will finally allow him to drive the F14 T in the way he would like.

"The car was very similar to the last race, but the circuit layout worked a bit better for our overall situation," said Raikkonen of his performance in Malaysia.

"For the next race we should get some new parts and be happier with the front end and drive a bit more how I want.

"The front end should feel a bit nicer after that, but we have to wait and see how we do on Friday and go from there.

"From the [pre-season] test [in Bahrain] I know there were some difficulties with the handling, but hopefully with some new parts we can sort that out and be even happier with the car than we were here.

"I think we have a pretty good understanding of what we want to do and where we want to go to make the feeling better and we can go much faster if we make that happen.

"The good thing is we did much better here [in Malaysia]. Obviously the results didn't show that but it's nice we're going in the right direction."

Red Bull: sensor issues indisputable

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 15:36 GMT

Red Bull says that the FIA cannot dispute that there are problems with Formula 1's fuel sensors, following another failure for the team in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Just a fortnight after Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified from the season opener in Australia for breaching F1's fuel-flow limit, the Australian's fuel sensor broke completely at Sepang on Sunday.

It meant the team had to rely on its own fuel-rail data readings to show its compliance with the regulations, although unlike in Australia this time the FIA accepted this course of action.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said the ongoing issues his team has faced are frustrating.

"It failed prior to the race," he said. "We informed the FIA about it and we asked the FIA if we could revive it on the grid by effectively power cycling the car.

"We did that at the start of the race but it didn't come back to life. So, the sensor didn't work the whole race.

"I think it clearly demonstrates that there are issues with these sensors."

While rival teams have not encountered the kind of troubles that Red Bull is facing, Horner said that there is no explanation as to why his outfit was suffering more than others.

"I've no idea why," he said. "Obviously we have a lot of data here to go away and look at.

"Theoretically there should not be a reason, but we need to look and understand it. Everyone else is happy with the sensor apparently.

"But Toro Rosso had two failures earlier in the weekend, and there have been other issues up and down the pitlane.

"They are the only ones we know about. But it certainly isn't unique to Red Bull."
